Meet the Team: Emily
Emily is one of our most dynamic consultants in the Sydney office! She fills the place with her positivity and fun vibes; she’s a whizz at finding those hard-to-find candidates and has a habit of busting out the dance moves once she’s found one a new job! She is an ace at kicking goals for the business but did we mention she used to kick her legs in the can-can?
What’s something people would never guess about you?
I have 2 fake teeth, or… that I have a fear of birds.
How did you get into recruitment?
By applying on SEEK. Keep in mind I had no idea about any of the worlds I am now a part of- recruitment, design, and brand. It was like entering a whole new world when I started!! Anyways, 12 hours after applying for the job, I had a missed call from Suzannah- and the rest is history! Haha.
Who did you want to be as a kid?
A dancer. Which I did end up doing professionally! But I also loved playing hairdressers when I was growing up, whether I wanted to be that or not, I don’t know, but I did play it a lot!
What is your most unusual talent or skill?
I am known to be a child magnet. Lucky for me because I love kids, so I love that they love me 🙂 The majority of my friends are older and have kids- my favourite moments are spent with them.
Something more unusual would be knowing how to flip a life raft, thanks to my time working on cruise ships. Also, being a muster station safety leader, I was responsible for like 100 odd passengers if the ship went down.
How do you spend your time outside of work?
Pilates. Going on walks. Cuddling my dog. Drinking coffee. Reading.
What achievements are you proud of?
Ripping myself out of a job I was super comfortable in to be thrown in the deep end of a whole new world. Of course, this huge change process was terrifying and uncomfortable, but what came from it was my biggest achievement- proving to myself that I am capable of so much more than I will ever realise and being proud of myself.
Most recently — in the last couple of months — I have been really looking after my health and doing a lot of inner work, which I am most proud of.
What were you like as a kid?
I asked my parents about this, so here it goes — I was a really good kid- very well-behaved. I always loved chatting with people (which, side note, is interesting to me because I’m not such a talker these days, haha!). I loved Cinderella, I forever wanted to do cartwheels everywhere, I loved going on the swing. I slept, walked and talked a lot (Dad always tried to have a conversation with me, and Mum was like, mate, she’s asleep. This is useless. Just take her back to bed.. haha!)
And one I’m really embarrassed about… eeek… I had a horrific fear that there were chickens under my bed or at the bottom of my bed at night. So there was a period when I slept in Mum and Dad’s bed. But even then, I was so sure there were chickens at the bottom of the bed, so I would curl up in a tight ball. WEIRD. Hahaha.

What movie or TV show do you rewatch often?
I’m not much of a TV person. That’s not to say I’ve never watched a series, but it’s quite rare. And I’m not someone who enjoys sitting down and watching a movie- maybe every now and then. I have never rewatched a series, but I have a memory of rewatching My Big Fat Greek Wedding every year on our family holiday growing up… haha! I have also watched Mamma Mia and Burlesque multiple times because, duh!
What’s your music taste?
I have a wide palette when it comes to music. Older music — QUEEN is my queen. I put the Bohemian Rhapsody movie soundtrack album on in the car whenever I’m in need of a pick-me-up — in particular, ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’. I also love Sam Smith — some deep and meaningful music. ABBA — any day, any time. Know every song, particularly the Mamma Mia soundtrack. My teen years saw me OBSESSED with Beyonce. I could go on and on… I’m down for most types of music. Just not heavy metal. 🙂
What’s the last thing you’ve read or a podcast you’ve listened to?
I am currently reading ‘Boy Swallows Universe’ by Trent Dalton. I listen to multiple podcasts that touch on topics revolving around the mind, the body… all things self-growth, self-love, and learning to give less of a f*#k (one of the podcasts is called ‘Do You F#*king Mind?’. Also some neuroscience facts in there too. I’ve always been interested in the depths of the mind and the body and how they work.
What’s your guilty pleasure?
Hot Chips.
What’s the wildest thing you’ve ever done?
Left home to live and work on a cruise ship at freshly turned 19? Wouldn’t say that’s wild, so to speak.. maybe jumping out of a plane? I went sky-diving in Miami.
If you could travel to any year in a time machine, what year would you choose?
I would love to go back to either 2014 (my last year of high school) or 2018, both because I would love to take the slivers of self-love and confidence I have now back to those times in my life. Also, take some ‘not caring so much about things that really don’t matter’.
What are three items on your bucket list?
Swim with turtles, experience a white Christmas — ideally in Europe like Switzerland for the stunning Christmas markets, and go on a wellness retreat.
What’s your favourite food of all time?
Acai bowls… Hot chips… God, so many foods!
What’s the weirdest thing in your closet?
Probably Minion slippers? Hahaha. They are never worn, but I went through a Minion obsession phase back in the day.
What was the silliest mistake you’ve ever made at work?
Not a mistake, but a funny little situation is how obsessed Linda (the office manager at our co-working space) is with us. She keeps an eye out on the cameras for us, and she always makes sure to get down every single day at least once to check-in. Bless her soul! Haha
What’s your favourite thing about working in recruitment?
Communicating, connecting, and meeting with new people. But above all else, giving people the opportunity to meet clients with incredible career opportunities, helping candidates better build their folio etc- mentoring them. Building strong relationships with clients and maintaining that with existing clients.
What advice would you like to give to our candidates searching for jobs?
Don’t let the job description scare you. If there is a thing or a few things on there that maybe you aren’t as strong at, don’t let that stop you from applying for that job. Be strong in yourself and your talent. It may feel like you’re knocked down time after time, but I guarantee the world is just waiting for the best-fit role for you – and it will come. When you least expect it!
